Screening For Dyslexia

0

This is why all schools should screen for dyslexia during kindergarten and first grade.

Susan Barton has conducted her live, in-person 6-day Screening for Dyslexia seminar twice each summer since 2002.

Sadly, she is no longer able to offer it in person.

She has started converting her Screening for Dyslexia seminar into an on-line course. But it will not be done, to her satisfaction and quality standards, by this summer.

Susan is working hard on it, and she hopes it will be ready by September.

She will announce it on her website and in this newsletter as soon as it is ready.

Thank you for your patience. It will be worth the wait.

Susan Barton gets so angry when someone accuses a child with dyslexia of being lazy.

They work ten times harder than the other kids.

Susan Barton will give a free one-hour webinar for Learning Ally on the critical topic of progress monitoring for students with dyslexia.

If you have ever wondered, "Is my child really making progress?," watch this webinar.

Susan Barton will explain:

  • What reading skills each common progress monitoring tool checks
  • Which reading skills should be checked in students with dyslexia
  • How to convert test scores into percentiles to see if real growth is being made

You will better understand how to assess academic performance in students with dyslexia, how to quantify improvement, and how to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction.

Date:  Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Time:   1 p.m.  Eastern Time

Cost:   Free

This will be recorded so you can watch it later.

Tutors, parents, and teachers are thrilled when Barton students quickly improve, as this tutor shared:

I have been using Levels 1, 2, and 3 for the last six months with several students, and I am amazed by the results.

My youngest student (almost 7 years old when we started) gained 6 months of reading progress in just 6 weeks! His teacher is astounded. She said she would not expect to see any advances until after the first semester.

More importantly, his confidence is sky-high, and he moved up to the highest level reading group in his class.

My oldest student, who just turned 13, saw a 38% increase in STAR testing in just eight weeks -- and he was a relatively strong reader already! His spelling is improving quickly, and he is now writing more maturely.

Susan, I'm so grateful for the Barton System, and for all the support you provide.

As of January 1, 2017, it will be much easier to get accommodations on the SAT the college entrance exam.  Under the new policy, school testing accommodation coordinators need to answer only two questions when submitting most requests for students: "Is the requested accommodation(s) in the student's plan?" and "Has the student used the accommodation(s) for school testing?"

If the answer is yes to both questions, eligible students can be approved to receive most accommodations on College Board exams.  Click here to see the new policy.

A new study from M.I.T., published in Neuron, claims that reduced brain plasticity may be the cause of dyslexia. Click here to see the article.

The neural brain structure in Autism and Dyslexia are completely different, which may explain their very different characteristics. Click here to see the article.

Once a parent or teacher has seen the rapid progress that Barton students make, they often want to convince the principal to bring the Barton System into their school so that other kids can get the same type of help. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to convince your principal.

Many Barton tutors want to share Susan Barton's 6-minute Facebook Video Chats with parents of their students or their teachers. So links to each of those chats are now on the Barton Tutor Support page.

You can now become certified in the Barton Reading & Spelling System remotely.

To participate remotely (from your home or office), you must have a:

  • desktop or portable computer
(iPads and handheld tablets will not work),

  • strong internet connection, and
  • camera plus microphone needed to participate in on-line meetings.

You must be very comfortable doing Zoom on-line meetings or remote tutoring sessions. Zoom is like Skype, just more stable. You can use Zoom for free.   www.Zoom.us

If you meet the above requirements, you can go through the certification session remotely. Those sessions run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. California time.

Yes, Susan will still offer her regular in-person certification sessions from time to time (for people who are not comfortable with technology), but remote sessions are much more convenient and there are no travel costs.
