Texas now requires Kindergarten and first grade screening for dyslexia
from Dyslexia Parent Network - Austin

SIGNED, SEALED, and DELIVERED! K & 1st grade screening for dyslexia is now REQUIRED in Texas public schools, beginning in 2017-18 school year, as HB 1886 has now been signed by the governor!

Our village people showed up to testify: Robbie Cooper of DDTX, Heather Hardeman of Dyslexia Parent Network (co-admin of this group), Courtney Hoffman of Texas ALTA, Amber Elenz who is on AISD (testified for herself), Alice Marsel of Dyslexia Center of Austin, and dyslexia parents and lobbyists Mike and Shannon Meroney worked on this bill to its successful passage.

Want to read it for yourself?
It is in sections 5 and 8 of this bill.

Soar With Success

I love it when schools spend a year doing a pilot program using the Barton System because I know the results will be great. And next year, the school will expand the program, as this teacher shared:

Susan, with your help and guidance through our first year using the Barton Reading & Spelling System, we have had students soar with growth.

We have seen discouraged, defeated parents turn into encouraged and hopeful parents. Students beam when they feel and see how much they have accomplished over the year.

For instance, a 4th grader started the year reading at a 2.9 grade level. After seven months of doing the Barton System, she is now reading at a 5.1 grade level.

We want to thank you so much. We will be forever grateful to you and your program.

And it's only the beginning!

Audio version of the driver's license manual

Many states offer an audio version of the driver's license test. But according to this article, only 15 states offer an audio version of the driver's license manual.

If you are a member of Decoding Dyslexia in a state that does NOT offer that option, gather your dyslexia warriors together and get that changed -- as this Pennsylvania parent did.

Here's a heartwarming story of a kind police officer who helped Gabby, a dyslexic teenager, who had a hard time understanding the computer-generated voice of the Arkansas "audio" version of its driver's test.

She knew all the facts in the manual, but Gabby failed the test 3 times while listening to the computer-generated voice.

She felt she might have to ride her horse for the rest of her life until Scotty Dail stepped in.

Study: What happened to your class valedictorian?
Published in Time Magazine
May 17, 2017

Excerpt:

What becomes of high school valedictorians? It's what every parent wishes their teenager to be. Mom says study hard and you'll do well. And very often Mom is right.

But not always!

Karen Arnold, a researcher at Boston College, followed 81 high school valedictorians and salutatorians from graduation onward to see what becomes of those who lead the academic pack.

How many of these number-one high school performers go on to change the world, run the world, or impress the world? The answer seems to be clear: zero.

This video summarizes the results.
