Why Early Intervention

0
0

"Dyslexia is a neurobiological disorder. Research has shown that brain plasticity decreases
through childhood.

It takes four times as long to intervene in fourth grade as it does in late kindergarten (NICHD)
because of brain development and because of the increase in content for students to learn as they
grow older.

Children at risk for reading failure can be reliably identified even before kindergarten (Gaab, 2017).
Struggling readers who do not receive early intervention tend to fall further behind their peers
(Stanovich, 1986)."

International Dyslexia Association, 2017

There are effective research-based methods that will bring their skills up to—and beyond—grade
level.

Susan Barton loves hearing about college-bound Barton students – like this one.

Dear Susan,

I want to tell you about my incredible daughter. Signe loved being read to as a small child, and we would check out several books each week. But she was unable to read them on her own.

In 3rd grade, as the words got longer and more complex, she hit a wall in reading. No matter how many times we practiced sight words, they would not stick. And she became increasingly frustrated.

In 4th grade, I started tutoring Signe in the Barton Reading & Spelling System. We spent the next four years working through your program. During this time, we watched our daughter’s confidence soar as her reading and spelling skills improved.

Today, our daughter is a college freshman living two hours away on campus. She is balancing a full class schedule, including Speech, Math, 2D design, Global Fashion History, and Sewing. Her goal is to earn a degree in Fashion Design.

Before the school year began, Signe met with the accommodations department to make sure the necessary arrangements were in place to support her success as a student with dyslexia.

She receives extended time on tests, has access to audio textbooks, and uses a Smart Pen and tablet to help her take notes during lectures.

Watching our daughter become her own best advocate has been an incredible experience.

We are constantly in awe of her determination to succeed.

Thank you for creating such a fantastic program.

How To Spot Dyslexia In A Writing Sample
by Susan Barton

If teachers from second grade through high school asked their students to write a one-page essay in class during the first week of school, they could easily pick out the students with dyslexia. And so could their parents.

To learn how to spot dyslexia in a writing sample, watch this video:
